Dark violet mold, hairy too!?
Q. I just killed a spot of mold in my basement and was wondering what kind it is and how serious. Specs: 1954 home basement finished approx 1970's or 1980's drywall entire wall bottom half is that 1/8" "decorative" wood paneling bottom 4" is that rubber flat trim. Mold was growing between tiled floor and trim. In the bottom crack area. It was about 2.5" long and looked like violet/black grass. When I sprayed it with 409 a smoke/powder erupted off of it, 3 times/3 sprays. Took a lot of paper towels. It's also looked like one of those really hairy catapillars that are black with spikes on them. Please inform me of this monster that I killed, hopefully.

A. The fungus you saw is the fruiting body or flower of the little bugger. The dust you saw were spores or the seeds of the critter, millions and millions of them. The critters leaves, stems and roots are entrenched in the wood of the wall. The only way to prevent another flower is to take away its source of water. Look to the outside ground and foundation for clues. Even a leaking gutter could be the cause, you'll just need to do some investigating. RScott

A. I am very pro-life. I go join others picketing abortion mills at least once a month. I donate to a pro-life group that trys to reach out to young pregnant women struggling with what to do (here is the web site if anyone is interested: ) In the story you expressed the anguish that many women have felt. I have not , thank god, personally experienced it--but it has been shared with me--including a couple of close friends. There are a couple of reasons people gave you a thumbs down: (1) the pro-abortion on demand folks would do it as knee jerk reaction.
