Quilting is a sewing method done to join two or more layers of material together to make a thicker padded material. A quilter is the name given to someone who works at quilting. The process of quilting uses a needle and thread to join two or more layers of material together to make a quilt. Typical quilting is done with three layers: the top fabric or quilt top, batting or insulating material and backing material. The quilter's hand or sewing machine passes the needle and thread through all layers and then brings the needle back up. The process is repeated across the entire piece where quilting is wanted. A straight or running stitch is commonly used and these stitches can be purely functional or decorative and elaborate. Quilting is done on bed spreads, art quilt wall hangings, clothing, and a variety of textile products. Quilting can make a project thick, or with dense quilting, can raise one area so that another stands out. Quilting can be done by hand, by sewing machine, or by a spacialist longarm quilting system. From Google News Search: "Quilting" What is the easiest way to transfer photo's onto a quilting square? Q. I want to incorperate people's faces in a spring handmade quilt. Everyone at work has to make a 12 x 12 inch quilting block for the quilt. I want to put their faces in the middle of flowers. Also everyone has a piece of the same material they have to use in the block in some way to tie the whole quilt together. Asked by mickeymore - Mon Mar 26 06:21:52 2007 - - 4 Answers - 0 Comments A. There are two ways to do this. You can get photo transfer paper at most craft stores and office supply stores. You print the photo onto the paper, then iron it on to the fabric. Be sure to reverse the picture before printing if there is writing on it, otherwise it will be backward when you iron it on. The second (and far better) way is to use fabric sheets that have been treated to go through an inkjet printer. They are available at many craft stores. You print directly on the fabric, so it is much more durable than the iron on version. Be sure to read the instructions before you buy the product - some need to be heat set, some are machine washable, etc. A similar alternative is to buy Bubble Jet Set and Bubble Jet Rinse - products that… [cont.] Answered by swbiblio - Mon Mar 26 13:31:39 2007 What's the difference between regular sewing fabric and quilting fabric? Q. What's the difference between regular sewing fabric and quilting fabric, if there is a difference? I don't want to end up purchasing the wrong fabric to create my quilt. Asked by ashleyg - Fri Jun 23 00:42:17 2006 - - 4 Answers - 0 Comments A. I also prefer cotton, but we have a saying at our guild..."If you want to make a quilt your children will enjoy, buy your fabric from WalMart, JoAnn Fabrics or the Rag Shop. If you want a quilt your great-grandchildren will enjoy, buy your fabric from a quilt shop". The reason for this is that the quilt shops receive the highest quality fabric runs, in general, know as the A quality fabrics and usually run about $8 to $9 per yard. Those of a slightly lesser quality, or B fabrics, end up at the chain fabric stores, usually at about $4 to $6 a yard. And of course, we've all seen the WalMart specials, typically the cheapest all the way around, for $1 and $2 per yard. On a side note: I've been able to find PLENTY of perfectly wonderful… [cont.] Answered by dragonwing - Mon Jun 26 13:20:13 2006 Does any one know of any good websites for quilting?
Q. I have finally found time to take up my favorite hobby of making quilts. I would love to find a website about quilting and quilting patterns. My all time favorite link for quilt blocks is: but there are so many other links out there, that there wouldn't be enough space to type them all here. What kind of quilting do you prefer? Traditional, contemporary, art, crazy quilts? Do you piece and quilt by hand or machine? Are you a very new, quilter or comfortable with different techniques? If you want to learn new things at the comfort of your home, I highly recommend taking classes at I'm currently taking my second fabric dyeing class there. The class prices are very reasonable and you work at your own pace. The students can ask questions in the forum for the teacher to answer and send pictures of their work in to the student gallery for the other students and the teacher so… [cont.] Answered by Gabriele M - Tue Jul 8 12:47:30 2008 From Yahoo Answer Search: "Quilting"
