On jewelry, I'd call them "embellishments" in general. They could be "charms" (usually with a hole?), or brads (prongs on the back) or just flat and sold as earring or other jewelry elements or "beads." Scrapbookers are also using a lot of these types of things nowadays too and they my have various other names. (If they were made from fabric, and put onto fabric, I'd call them appliques... if they were put onto polymer clay, I might also call them onlays, or if pressed into the clay, inlays.) I've seen them at bead stores, and at craft/hobby stores in the jewelry making or scrapbooking sections. HTH, Diane B. Answered by Diane B. - Mon Apr 28 10:41:29 2008 Does anyone know what beads are on my antique necklace?
Q. I have an antique necklace that was my grandmother's, from the 1940s. A few years ago it needed to be restrung because it was starting to fall apart so my mom took it to a jeweler's. (I'm 21 but wore it for yearss when I was younger)..Anyway, the lady at the jeweler's wanted to know if she wanted it appraised.. At the time my mom said not at this time...But she was all over it & interested my mom said.. Does anyone know what kind of bead/gemstone it is?? or maybe even how much it's possibly worth? Just wondering. Going to take it to the jeweler's one of these days though. Heres's a pic of the necklace: Asked by unknown - Wed May 6 14:00:55 2009 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments A. it's very hard to make an assumption with a photo like this. We would need a closer photo and a photo of the complete necklace. The back says a lot about a necklace, especially the clasp. Are the beads warm to the touch and have some inclusions? They could be Amber. (Test for amber: Rub the specimen vigorously on a soft cloth. True amber may omit a faint resinous fragrance, become heavily charged with static electricity and will easily pick up small pieces of loose paper). Are the beads cold, they could be anything, glass, crystal or semi precious gemstones. It's a very nice looking necklace, but not antique yet. True antiques are only called that when they are > 100 years old. Cheers Answered by loves_jewels - Thu May 7 21:08:50 2009 From Yahoo Answer Search: "Bead and Gemstone" |
