In the context of ceramics, for example, an appliqué is a separate piece of clay added to the primary work, generally for the purpose of decoration. The word appliqué is a french word that, in this context, means "that has been applied". In the context of sewing, applique refers a needlework technique in which pieces of fabric, embroidery, or other materials are sewn onto another piece of fabric to create designs, patterns or pictures. It is particularly suitable for work which is to be seen from a distance, such as in banner-making. A famous example of applique is the Hastings Embroidery. Appliqued cloth is an important art form in Benin, West Africa, particularly in the area around Abomey, where it has been a tradition since the 18th century and the kingdom of Danhomè. Applique is used extensively in quilting. "Dresden Plate" and "Sunbonnet Sue" are two examples of traditional American quilt blocks that are constructed with both patchwork and applique. Baltimore album quilts, Broderie perse, Hawaiian quilts, Amish quilts and the ralli quilts of India and Pakistan also use applique. From Wikipedia under the

Iron the shiny side of the paper down on your shape, folding the edges over the freezer paper. Slip the freezer paper out and slip stitch the applique in place! Q. What is an easy fast way to applique butterflies onto a quilt top? Asked by Cosmic I - Mon Aug 7 13:55:55 2006 - - 3 Answers - 1 Comments A. The easiest and fastest way is to buy iron-on appliques at a sewing or craft store. You can also buy it online, but you don't always get EXACTLY what you want. If you don't find any good ready-made iron-on appliques, you can get a picture of butterflies you like, and if you have access to an inkjet printer, you could print the designs on either a iron-on transfer or iron-on fabric sheet (like ColorFast). I highly recommend the fabric sheet because it does last longer than just simple transfers which sometimes tend to flake off over time. Another option, if you don't have inkjet access, is to use butterfly fabric and either a fusible bonding web like stitch witchery, heat 'n bond, or even Wonder Under (this one is preferred by quilters).… [cont.] Answered by craftingbookworm - Mon Aug 7 14:04:53 2006 From Yahoo Answer Search: "applique" Wenham quilt dedicated at Town Hall - Hamilton-Wenham Chronicle
