The concept of Central Europe, and that of a common identity, is somewhat elusive. However, scholars assert that a distinct "Central European culture, as controversial and debated the notion may be, exists." It is based on "similarities emanating from historical, social and cultural characteristics", and it is identified as having been "one of the world's richest sources of creative talent" between the 17th and 20th centuries. As of the 2000's, Central Europe is going through a phase of "strategic awakening". The region's economy shows high disparities with regard to income and living standards: besides encompassing some of Europe’s richest regions, Central Europe also includes some of Europe’s poorest ones. No country is an economic island, though Japan tried and you can see what that resulted in (their invasion by the U.S.). Trade is essential to the success of any economy. Furthermore, some of these countries have a relative surplus of labor and so have been exporting their workers to other countries in Europe. The remittances to the home country by these workers is an important source of income and their labor is an important part of the countries they are working in.
