Durante degli Alighieri (May/June c.1265 – September 14, 1321), commonly known as Dante, was an Italian poet of the Middle Ages. His Divine Comedy, originally called Commedia and later called Divina by Boccaccio, is often considered the greatest literary work composed in the Italian language and a masterpiece of world literature.

In Italy he is known as "the Supreme Poet" (il Sommo Poeta) or just il Poeta. Dante, Petrarch and Boccaccio are also known as "the three fountains" or "the three crowns". Dante is also called the "Father of the Italian language". The first biography written on him was by Giovanni Boccaccio (1313-1375), who wrote the Trattatello in laude di Dante.

A. Phil A. is wrong. _The Inferno_ is the first part of the trilogy; the second part is _Purgatorio_ and the last _Paradiso._ The book is about the purifying of a person so that he or she is ready to meet the ultimate source of everything: God. In the Inferno Dante admits his sinfulness by acknowledging and encountering and identifying with other sinners; in Purgatory he is shown how a penitent might purge himself of those sins and make himself pure, and in Paradise he experiences the endless and inexpressible fulfillment of virtue and holiness.

Why is Dante Alighieri referred to as just "Dante"?
Q. Writers are usually referred to by their surname when mentioned more than once e.g. Hemingway for Ernest Hemingway, Hill for Joe Hill, Ellison for Harlan Ellison, etc. Dante Alighieri seems to be the exception, as he is commonly referred to as simply Dante and not Alighieri . Why is that?

A. I can imagaine that this may be because it was difficult to pronounce Alighieri. With his work becoming so epic and widely known over the years there could be dialogues like "Have you read Alighieri's Divine Comedy?" "Who?" "You know... Divine Comedy, Dante Aligh..." "Aaaahhh, DANTE Arliguira..." "No, Alighieri." "What?" "Dante Alighieri!" "Yep, Dante." You get the drift... I can wait until tomorrow. If no one comes up with a more reasonable answer I contact the Dante Society. No kiddin'.

Durante degli Alighieri, better known as Dante, (c. 1 June 126513/14 September 1321) was an Italian Florentine poet. His greatest work, La divina commedia (The Divine Comedy), is considered the greatest literary statement produced in Europe in the medieval period, and the basis of the modern Italian language.
