Perhaps the broadest definition is that provided by psychologist Herbert Simon: 'Everyone designs who devises courses of action aimed at changing existing situations into preferred ones.' To become a professional designer usually requires study to degree level and certain work experience or training. In the 1980s the term 'designer' began to be applied to products such as furniture and clothing that had distinctive aesthetics or were the work of certain 'signature' designers. So, for example, there were 'designer chairs' and 'designer jeans'. I'm a graphic design student at the moment and work at Lowes minimum hours at the moment as a cashier. I heard one (maybe more) of the kitchen designers has a graphic design degree though. This confuses me but I'm interested in learning more about this since I've been given the opportunity to work in that area. I thought they would have needed some sort of interior design degree? Well I'm going to say, like a lot of those industries- books, music, film etc there is an element of luck involved in getting employed. However, I would just find a couple of publishers you are interested in working for and ask them for some work experience, if you can prove in the short time you have as work experience that you are irreplaceable then chances are you will get a job there.
