Dunes are subject to different forms and sizes based on their interaction with the wind. Most kinds of dune are longer on the windward side where the sand is pushed up the dune, and a shorter "slip face" in the lee of the wind. The "valley" or trough between dunes is called a slack. A "dune field" is an area covered by extensive sand dunes. Large dune fields are known as ergs. Some coastal areas have one or more sets of dunes running parallel to the shoreline directly inland from the beach. In most cases the dunes are important in protecting the land against potential ravages by storm waves from the sea. Although the most widely distributed dunes are those associated with coastal regions, the largest complexes of dunes are found inland in dry regions and associated with ancient lake or sea beds. Dunes also form under the action of water flow (alluvial processes), on sand or gravel beds of rivers, estuaries and the sea-bed. The modern word "dune" came into English from French circa 1790 but it's an old Indo-European word that's found in most of the Slavic languages as well as the Germanic and Latin languages. In ancient times words cognate to "dune" probably had the meaning of a citadel or built-up hill fortification. From Wikipedia under the
GNU Free Documentation License Can anyone describe how a dune form due to a huge rock where there is enough sand and the wind blows strong? Q. I need to know how a dune forms because of a huge rock where sand gathers around it, or something like that! An di also want to know the different types of dunes there is, and possible web links to check out some pics about it! Asked by christel - Fri Apr 17 08:56:18 2009 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments A. Let's assume the wind is blowing from North to South. The North side of the rock will collect small bits of sand in it's crevaces, but on the South side of the rock the sand will blowover the top of the rock and fall to the ground on that side due to the weight of the sand and the fact that the wind will go over the top, causing a minor vacuum effect on the South side of the rock. Imagine a rock in a stream and some silt came flowing downstream. The silt will swirl over the top of the rock and fall to the downstream side of the rock. In time this will form more and more sand to collect and form a dune. Dunes can also be formed around vegetation, starting at the roots and slowly building up around the vegetation. Q. What type of a rock is a sand dune? Given it is quartz, is it not a rock, but a mineral. Or is it a sedimentary rock. Or is it something else? Asked by islndnative - Thu Oct 23 00:19:42 2008 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments A. A sand dune is unconsolidated sand, therefore its not a rock. The sand in a sand dune is usually quartz which is a relatively light weight and very resistant mineral, but can also contain calcite, feldspar, and micas. If the sand dune were to become lithified through compaction and diagenesis, then it would be a rock called sandstone. A good example would be the Jurassic Navajo Sandstone in southern Utah and northern Arizona.
