Literature is the art of written works. Literally translated, the word means "acquaintance with letters" (from Latin littera letter), and therefore the academic study of literature is known as Letters (as in the phrase "Arts and Letters"). In Western culture the most basic written literary types include fiction and nonfiction.

How is the literature industry doing during the recession?
Q. I'm interested in becoming a editor, book publisher, or author when I get older how is the literature industry doing? I plan on books! Not the news paper!

A. Thanks to the recession, book sales (especially fiction) are soaring. See link below. Newspapers are a bad medium to be in; they really are dying off. It's just a sign of the times, not so much a byproduct of the recession.

What is the difference between english and literature essays?
Q. I need to write a few essays for both my english 2 and early american literature class. A lot of the stories we are reading are the same. I need to know what the difference in the essay should be. For example, is one supposed to be about how the story is composed and the other a summary of the story? Please Help! Well I know that. What I'm asking is about the composition.

A. An essay in english2 could be about pretty much anything. An essay in american lit would have to be relevant to American Literature.

What are some literature activities for a preschool class?
Q. What are some literature activities for a preschool class? (Ages 2 1/2-4) I'm an Early Childhood Education student and I need to implement certain activities including a literature activity. I just find this one of the more harder topics to find ideas for.

A. My favorite literature activities were ones where we read a book then did an activity related to it. For example: Read "The Doorbell Rang" and then bake cookies. Read "If You Give a Moose a Muffin" and bake muffins. Read "Three Billy Goats Gruff" and act out the story. (The used a table and chairs for the bridge and made costumes out of stuff in the art area.) We could do a whole week's worth of activities based on a story. These are called "story stretchers", "story extenders," or "literature extension activities" and there are resource books and websites full of ideas. Your local library may have Story S-t-r-e-t-c-h-e-r-s: Activities to Expand Children's Favorite Books by Shirley Raines. That's a book I used a lot!
