A patchwork quilt is a quilt in which the top layer consists of pieces of fabric sewn together to form a design. The quilting design does not necessarily follow the patchwork design.

Originally, this was to make full use of left-over scraps of fabric, but now fabric is often bought specially for a specific design. Fabrics are now often sold in quarter meters. (A "fat quarter" is one square meter folded into four and cut along the folds, thus giving a square piece of fabric 50 cm on a side, as opposed to buying a quarter of a meter off the roll, resulting in a long thin piece that is only 25cm wide).

Designs can be geometric and formal or imaginative.

The quilt is formed of three layers: the patchwork, a layer of insulation wadding (batting) and a layer of backing material. These three layers are stitched together ("quilted"), either by hand or machine. The quilting can either outline the patchwork motifs, or be a completely independent design.

How does one go about restoring a patchwork quilt about 60 years old?
Q. it is a double wedding ring with some of the pieces missing, as well as the batting behind them. The binding is partly missing, but that is easy.

A. If you think this quilt has value and you're trying to preserve or improve the value as an antique, do NOT repair it. Clean it carefully, fold it with acid free tissue paper bunched up in the folds, and put it in an acid free storage box. "Repairing" it will destroy any value it has as an antique. Check out the link below for a better explanation, and examples of what you CAN do and still retain the value of the quilt.

Where can I find a cute, patchwork quilt?
Q. I am a 13 year old girl, and need one fast. I have seen Denise Schmidt's quilts, and absolutely adore them. The only problem is is that they are too expensive. I mean really expensive. If someone could find some like her's (with a cheaper price) I would really appreciate it.

A. You know, many of Denise Schmidt's quilts are very easy to make yourself. If you have a sewing machine and some fabric, you can put together a simple quilt fairly quickly for under $50 in material, batting and thread. Check out these Flickr groups for photos of similar projects: Here are some blogs that have excellent tutorials for the type of quilt you're interested in:

Where's the best place to go for Quilting (patchwork) Fabrics?
Q. I'm heading over to London from Canada next month. Where is the best place to shop for Prints for Quilting (or Patchwork as known in the UK)? Like Kaffe Fasset designs etc. Does not have to be Central London. Basically anywhere I can get to on the Underground or Brit. Rail!

A. I'd go into the fabric shops, curtain shops and beg for the sample fabrics. They may make you pay a small fee but you can get designer fabrics for next to nothing. Email Osbourn and Little and ask what they do with theirs. Some dispose of them through charity shops, some put them in the rubbish bins at the back of the shops. I drive a refuse wagon and for a hoarder like me, it is the ideal job. You'd be amazed at what people chuck out. I have found designer fabrics, take them home and make them into cushions, which I then sell.
