A patchwork quilt is a quilt in which the top layer consists of pieces of fabric sewn together to form a design. The quilting design does not necessarily follow the patchwork design.

Originally, this was to make full use of left-over scraps of fabric, but now fabric is often bought specially for a specific design. Fabrics are now often sold in quarter meters. (A "fat quarter" is one square meter folded into four and cut along the folds, thus giving a square piece of fabric 50 cm on a side, as opposed to buying a quarter of a meter off the roll, resulting in a long thin piece that is only 25cm wide).

Designs can be geometric and formal or imaginative.

The quilt is formed of three layers: the patchwork, a layer of insulation wadding (batting) and a layer of backing material. These three layers are stitched together ("quilted"), either by hand or machine. The quilting can either outline the patchwork motifs, or be a completely independent design.

Why do you have to cut the backing of a quilt bigger than the patchwork?
Q. This is my first time making a quilt. Everything I have read says to cut the backing of my quilt at least 3" bigger all around. I can understand this for machine quilting, but I don't understand how this is important for hand quilting, especially if you are you just going to cut it off later. Also, I want to bind the quilt in a different material than the backing. Please help! Thanks.

A. Look at a finished quilt. See how the quilting stitches are indented, and the unstitched parts are puffy? The stitching pulls the fabric in just a bit. This "shrinks" the fabric during the quilting process. It's even more essential when machine quilting, especially if you're quilting on a frame. With a frame, you need even more extra backing to attach to clamps. Also, whether frame, machine, or hand quilting, the more quilting stitches you have (the more detailed and complex the quilting), the more it will shrink during the stitching. Think of it as a precaution. You'd much rather have a little fabric cut off at the end, than finish quilting and flip it over to find that your backing is a bit smaller than your top. Patchwork Quilt help?
Q. I am planning on making a patchwork quilt out of my son's old clothes as I can't bear to part with them and I thought it would be nice to make a patchwork quilt either for his bed or as a throw. Trouble is I have no idea how to make one! Please could someone advise me how to do this or point me to a website that would help? Thank you so much x

A. If some of the clothing is knit, this site will explain how to prepare this fabric so it does not stretch out of shape. This site has good information from start to finish - The borders used are not necessary and if you do not want to bind the edges, cut the batting & backing a little larger than the quilt top. Place the top face up then place the backing face down, then the batting. Baste to hold and then stitch around the perimeter, leaving a 10" opening on one side. Trim the backing and batting to 1/2" and then turn through the opening. Press. Hand stitch the opening closed and top stitch as you wish. All these terms sound like a foreign language?
