Quilting is a sewing method done to join two or more layers of material together to make a thicker padded material. A quilter is the name given to someone who works at quilting.

The process of quilting uses a needle and thread to join two or more layers of material together to make a quilt. Typical quilting is done with three layers: the top fabric or quilt top, batting or insulating material and backing material. The quilter's hand or sewing machine passes the needle and thread through all layers and then brings the needle back up. The process is repeated across the entire piece where quilting is wanted. A straight or running stitch is commonly used and these stitches can be purely functional or decorative and elaborate. Quilting is done on bed spreads, art quilt wall hangings, clothing, and a variety of textile products. Quilting can make a project thick, or with dense quilting, can raise one area so that another stands out.

Quilting can be done by hand, by sewing machine, or by a spacialist longarm quilting system.

Does any one know of any good websites for quilting?
Q. I have finally found time to take up my favorite hobby of making quilts. I would love to find a website about quilting and quilting patterns.

A. My all time favorite link for quilt blocks is: but there are so many other links out there, that there wouldn't be enough space to type them all here. What kind of quilting do you prefer? Traditional, contemporary, art, crazy quilts? Do you piece and quilt by hand or machine? Are you a very new, quilter or comfortable with different techniques? If you want to learn new things at the comfort of your home, I highly recommend taking classes at I'm currently taking my second fabric dyeing class there. The class prices are very reasonable and you work at your own pace. The students can ask questions in the forum for the teacher to answer and send pictures of their work in to the student gallery for the other students and the teacher so… [cont.]

Are there any quilting guilds that are open to the public in or around new york city?
Q. I'm a recently divorced and retired woman who finally has some spare time and really enjoy quilting. I'm trying to find a group of ladies who share my passion and are in the new york city area. Thanks in advance for your help!

A. I can't imagine there would be too many that weren't "open to the public" though you might have to join after coming free a few times. Here's a list of some of the actual guilds around NYC, but there may be many more small groups (associated with the guilds or not) that get together, or get together to make things for specific reasons, etc: Manhattan Guilds: Empire Quilters: Quilters of Color: Studio Art Quilt Association: (...*that one* may be by invitation only) Brooklyn Guild: Quilters Guild of Brooklyn: Queens Guild: Richmond Hill Piecemakers: Staten Island Guilds: Staten Island Quilters Guild: Naknar@aol.com Moonlight Quilters of Staten Island: Naknar@aol.com Long Island Guilds: Long Island Quilters' Society: … [cont.]
