Nounquilts
Verbquilts
From Wiktionary under the GNU Free Documentation License. A quilt is a type of bedding composed several layers generally combined using the technique of quilting. Many are made with decorative designs, and some of these are not used as bed covering at all, but are rather made to be hung on a wall or otherwise displayed. In addition to quilting the quilt layers can be combinde by tying. Tying refers to the technique of using thread, yarn or ribbon to pass through all three layers of the quilt at regular intervals. These "ties" hold the layers together during use and especially when the quilt is washed. This method is easier and more forgiving if the quilt is made by hand. Tied quilts are called, depending on the regional area, "lap", "comfort" or "comforter", among other names. In British English, duvet may be used instead of quilt, wadding is another way of saying batting, and calico refers to muslin, rather than to a fabric with a printed pattern on it. I love things made by hand.I think it the most special gift one could receive.Where could I learn how to sew and make quilts? I am in Houston...for the people that do this, where did you learn? Asked by crystal - Fri Aug 18 11:30:29 2006 - - 10 Answers - 0 Comments A. Alot of times your local fabric store will have classes on that kind of stuff. Also you could try www.quilts.com and read on the quilters festival right there in Houston. I googled it. I typed in "quilting classes in Houston" and they had a bunch of websites. Hope this helps. Answered by chickmomma5 - Fri Aug 18 11:46:59 2006 Does anyone know where I can have OLD quilts repaired? Q. I have a few quilts that were my great aunts and great grandmothers that I would like to have repaired. One is semi-finished and the other two need repairs. Asked by mayihelpyou - Tue Dec 19 15:44:33 2006 - - 5 Answers - 1 Comments A. I have a lot of old quilts that my great-grandmother made. I usually mend them myself. However, obviously that isn't the answer...You should take one into a seamstress at your favorite dry cleaners. Ask them if they do that kind of mending. If not, they should be able to recommend someone that does. The other thing is at a local farmer's market or flea market. Many times there are locals that do this kind of work. Answered by Thomas H - Tue Dec 19 15:54:21 2006 What is the best method to applique on quilts?
Q. I really need to know the specific steps that go along with the method. I'm still a bit new to sewing. Asked by crimson_aurora - Tue Jul 11 20:23:12 2006 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments A. I'm with the other ladies...however, I'm inclined to go with going to a quilt store and talking to them. Maybe they have a class? Or if they're slow, someone may take kindly to you and give you a mini lesson...at least steer you towards a book for reference. I personally like using freezer paper (it sticks when you iron the shiney side to your fabric) and use that as my edge to turn against...when you're done, you cut it out the back side of the backing fabric and remove the paper. Some applique artists don't eliminate the extra layer at all, liking the dimension it gives the quilt (however, no freezer paper for this one). Good luck...I was daunted with the whole thing when I started, and got pretty good with it. You'll be fine.
