News is the communication of information on current events which is presented by print, broadcast, Internet, or word of mouth to a third party or mass audience.

History of news reporting

In its infancy, news gathering was primitive by today's standards. Printed news had to be phoned in to a newsroom or brought there by a reporter, where it was typed and either transmitted over wire services or edited and manually set in type along with other news stories for a specific edition. Today, the term "breaking news" has become trite as broadcast and cable news services use live satellite technology to bring current events into consumers' homes live as they happen. Events that used to take hours or days to become common knowledge in towns or in nations are fed instantaneously to consumers via radio, television, mobile phone, and the Internet.

What is the best online news website that gives the top stories of the day?
Q. I enjoy reading Reuters and Yahoo News but I want a website that will give me the most important news stories from the entire day, not the most recent breaking news. I want something like an online newspaper for US and international news.

A. CNN gives the breaking news on the first page; however, if you click on the "World" or "U.S." tabs, you will get the top stories of the day without the breaking news stuff that you don't want. You can also click find information from previous days.

What news station do you think has the most accurate information about each Obama and McCain?
Q. Although I am only 16, I find it extremely difficult to turn it to a news station nowadays because if one news station supports Obama, of course they are only going to say positive things about him and vice versa with McCain. What news station do you think has the most accurate information about each Obama and McCain? Also, do you think that someone should research a candidate completely before voting for them? Like looking up their records? How well have you researched the candidate you are voting for? Thanks!

A. I agree it's difficult. I think BBC is the best option. Another thing I try to do is watch both sides of the networks...Keith Olberman, Rachel Maddow, Hardball with Chris Mathews and then Fox news channel for the other side...each will put out the stories on the other and you can compare/contrast and sometimes see backstories on each candidate that shows how they are lying now. The best is when they show McCain during his last try for president...his views and statements are opposite of what he is saying this time...so it's not biased, it's showing true flip flopping. Good for you that at such a young age you are showing great intellect by attempting to gather the truth and for not being so gullible as to believe that our "news" is… [cont.]

How do I write a summary for a news article? And an overall summary of all the articles?
Q. I need to write 14 individual summaries for 14 different news articles article. Because these articles all have the same theme- human rights in china, i also have to write one big summary including stuff from the news articles about the theme (human rights). I already have all the news articles and i have highlighted all the main points in each article. What should my format be like and how long should the summaries be? It would also be helpful to know exactly how to write a summary. Thanks!

A. Your best bet would be to summarize the leads (first paragraph) of the stories. Or look at the first three paragraphs of the stories. That is generally what the crux of the story is about. You could summarize by writing something like, "Recent news reports about human rights in China show that ___" Focus on the main themes and highlight at least three points from the stories. Good luck.
